The Bay has its high points, but too much of it feels like something I've seen countless times before. Faces and chests are totally blown out and there is definitely some material there to make you squirm. While early on in the film the effects aren't really noteworthy, though they are gross, as the film progresses they go pretty wild with the practical/makeup effects and some of it looks really cool. Another great aspect though is that even with scenes such as that, you do in fact get to see a ton of effects on screen. Without giving it away, you get a real sense of the trauma and horror without ever seeing a thing. There are some sequences with very frightening implications as well, such as a 911 audio recording from two police officers entering the home of an "infected" family. Similarly, in the aftermath of the events, the desolate streets littered with bodies are pretty haunting. Early footage of the small town festivities, before the mysterious outbreak that strikes on a 4th of July afternoon, is warm and charming. This isn't to say there aren't good aspects however. You could run a checklist of found footage tropes and this would probably hit every item. The acting ranges from bad to just passable across the board, we're treated to several obvious jump scares with added sound effect to enhance (which is a huge pet peeve for me in a found footage film, as such sound obviously should not exist within the footage), and the film pads its slightly shorter than average running times with repetitive sequences of spliced together informational footage.

This is likely because, while it isn't a terrible film, it does display a number of the trappings of a bad found footage movie. This origin point is interesting and does make the film a bit more approachable to a broad audience, but The Bay still failed to find any meaningful success. So he spiced the events up some and brought forth a mockumentary instead, featuring many of those facts alongside a horrific, fictional event. After watching a documentary on the topic for research, he became intrigued by the pollution and lack of fish in the bay, but believed that in documentary format, no one was going to care.
